About this place
Rawalpindi (often called "Pindi" by locals) is a bustling city of over 2 million people (2017) in Pakistan, strategically located between the Punjab region and Azad Kashmir. It serves as the sister city of Islamabad — essentially its older, more organic counterpart. With a strong colonial influence and a large military cantonment that houses the headquarters of the Pakistan Army, Rawalpindi offers a slice of real Pakistan, especially in contrast to the more polished Islamabad.
For visitors, Pindi is an interesting place to wander and soak in lively street life, particularly if you're based in Islamabad and looking for some hustle and bustle. While the city is not blessed with an extensive architectural history, its markets like Raja Bazaar and Saddar Bazaar buzz with energy. Wealthy southern suburbs such as Bahria Town provide a few modern attractions that make for a worthwhile excursion.

Planning Tips
- Use taxis for getting between areas like Raja Bazaar and Saddar — they are cheap (typically Rs 100–250 per trip). Always agree on the fare before getting in.
- For long-distance travel, consider Daewoo or Skyways coaches; they offer comfortable service to major cities like Lahore, Peshawar, and Murree. A first-class ticket between Rawalpindi and Lahore costs Rs 800–3,000 and includes a meal.
- Female travelers should bring or purchase a shawl upon arrival and wear a long top covering the backside to draw less unwanted attention and gain local respect.
- Keep larger banknotes (Rs 1,000) hidden and show only small notes when haggling or paying taxi drivers.
- Drink from a straw and ensure bottles are opened in front of you as a cleanliness precaution. Avoid drinks from places with flies.
- International fast-food chains are considered status symbols and are overpriced — instead, try local street food like jalebee, samosas, halwa poori, and rabri for a more authentic and affordable experience.
