About this place
Rasht, the capital of Gilan province in northern Iran, offers a distinct change of pace from the country's more arid south. Known throughout Iran for its lush parks and a considerably wetter, cooler climate, the city sits roughly 40 km inland from the Caspian Sea and is surrounded by fertile landscapes. Its colonial-era Shahrdari building is a central landmark, and the modern Golsar district hums with cafes and boutiques, giving the city a vibrant, youthful energy.
Beyond the city, Rasht provides a gateway to spectacular natural and historical sites. The dense forests of the Alborz mountains hide the impressive Rudkhan Castle, while the famously photogenic mountain village of Masouleh clings to a steep hillside nearby. The Caspian port of Bandar-e-Anzali is also within easy reach, offering a different flavor of coastal life.

- May to early September — this is the warmest and most stable period, with average temps around 22.7°C and low rainfall (2.6 mm), perfect for exploring both the city and the mountains.
- Spring (April–May) — the surrounding countryside is exceptionally lush and green, and temperatures are very comfortable for hiking to places like Rudkhan Castle.
- Avoid deep winter — winters are cold and wet with lows near 5.6°C, making outdoor exploration and mountain road travel less appealing.

- Pack for rain — Rasht has a famously wet climate even when other parts of Iran are dry; a waterproof jacket and sturdy shoes are a good idea no matter the season.
