About this place
Arcot and Ranipet are twin towns facing each other across the Palar River in northern Tamil Nadu. Arcot was once the capital of the pre-colonial Carnatic Sultanate, giving it a historical weight that contrasts with Ranipet's busy industrial character. Ranipet, meaning "place of the queen," was founded in 1771 and named for a young widow who committed sati — a now-banned ancient tradition — after her husband's death.
Today, Ranipet is a significant industrial hub, particularly known for its leather industry, while Arcot retains remnants of its regal past. The two towns together offer a glimpse of Tamil Nadu's layered history alongside its modern economic life.
