About this place

Last updated Jun 13, 2026

Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, rests on the Chota Nagpur Plateau at an elevation of 650 meters. The city is surrounded by extensive forests that shelter wildlife including bears, sambar, chital, nilgai, and hares, and its red-soil landscape creates a distinctive setting in eastern India.

The city enjoys a subtropical climate with warm summer afternoons giving way to cool, pleasant evenings. Winters are distinctly cool to cold, and the area receives substantial annual rainfall. This climate, combined with its plateau location, makes Ranchi a refreshing contrast to the lowland cities of the region.

As a regional center with a population of over one million, Ranchi serves as a gateway to Jharkhand's natural attractions. Travelers will find a city where Hindi, Bhojpuri, Bengali, and several tribal languages including Sadri, Oraon, and Mundari are commonly spoken, though English is not widely used in everyday interactions.
