About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Rạch Giá is the capital of Kiên Giang province in Vietnam's Mekong Delta. For most leisure travelers it serves as a practical transit hub — the city is best known as the main jumping-off point for Phú Quốc island, with frequent ferry connections across the Gulf of Thailand.

The city has a mostly functional feel, with a busy waterfront, a compact center, and enough local food stalls and cafés to keep you comfortable during a short stay. While it isn't a major sightseeing destination, a few temples and a small museum offer a glimpse of regional history and delta culture before you head offshore.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Book Phú Quốc ferries ahead — ticket offices cluster near the port; consider buying online to secure a morning departure.
  • Use Mai Linh green minibuses — they're faster than local buses because they don't stop frequently for passengers.
  • Choose accommodations near the harbor — close to early-morning hydrofoil departures and ticket offices.
  • Allow buffer time on bus travel days — local services can take 10–15 minutes just to reach the main road.
