About this place

Last updated Jul 26, 2026

Quito, the capital of Ecuador, stretches across Andean valleys at an altitude of 2,850 m (9,350 ft), making it one of the world's highest capital cities. The city was the first to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, recognized for having the largest and most intact colonial city center in the Americas. Its Old City is a living museum of 16th- to 19th-century architecture, with more than 40 churches, 16 convents and monasteries, and 17 plazas.

Modern Quito fans out north and south from the historic core. The La Mariscal district is the main tourist hub, packed with restaurants, bars, hostels, and museums. Further north, the artsy La Floresta neighborhood offers murals, cafes, and street food. The city's elevation means mild temperatures year-round and very few insects, but visitors should plan for a day or two of adjustment to the altitude.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 26, 2026
  • Dress in layers — cool nights and warm afternoons mean you'll want flexibility; a light jacket or sweater is useful even on sunny days.
  • Carry small bills — taxi drivers rarely have change, and smaller restaurants and shops appreciate exact change for purchases under $5.
  • Learn basic Spanish phrases — greetings, numbers, and directions go a long way, especially outside La Mariscal.
  • Use hotel-dispatched taxis at night — most hotels and restaurants will call a vetted taxi; avoid hailing unmarked cabs after dark.
  • Keep valuables out of sight on buses — wear backpacks on your chest, avoid overhead bins, and stay alert to distractions, especially on long-distance routes.
