About this place
Quanzhou is a coastal city in Fujian province with a deep and fascinating history as one of the world’s greatest ports. A millennium ago, it served as the main eastern terminus of the Maritime Silk Road, welcoming a vast international community of Arab, Persian, and Indian merchants. Marco Polo famously sailed from here around 1292, describing the city as the busiest port on earth and marveling at its wealth.
Today, Quanzhou is still a major and prosperous port, but it offers travelers something special: a city remarkably rich in historic buildings that range from ancient temples and a surviving 11th-century mosque to entire neighborhoods with traditional architecture. In 2021, UNESCO recognized this heritage by listing "Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China" as a World Heritage site, encompassing 16 locations in and around the city.
Unlike its better-known neighbors Fuzhou and Xiamen, Quanzhou sees fewer tourists, making it a rewarding destination for those who appreciate mingling with local life. The city is also the cultural heart of South Fujian, the birthplace of traditional Minnan opera and puppetry, and offers excellent shopping for antiques, ceramics, and one of China’s most famous oolong teas, Tieguanyin.

Planning Tips
- Learn a few words of Minnan, the local language, to delight locals even though most are bilingual in Mandarin.
- Use the efficient high-speed rail network for easy access; the station connects directly to Fuzhou, Xiamen, and points far beyond.
- Plan your arrival using your map app and guidebooks updated after 2012, as the old railway station shown on older maps is permanently closed.
- Budget at least ¥8 to ¥20 for a taxi to get almost anywhere in the city center.
- Consider using Xiamen's larger international airport as a gateway, with frequent buses connecting to Quanzhou in about an hour and a half.
- When buying tea or antiques, do not hesitate to bargain, and take your time sampling different grades before deciding.
- For a unique arrival or departure, look into the daily ferry service from the port of Shijing to Taiwan-controlled Kinmen Island.
