About this place
Qinhuangdao is a coastal city in northeastern Hebei Province, set along the Bohai Sea. It blends historic significance as the eastern terminus of the Great Wall with a string of seaside resort areas. The city stretches across distinct districts: the historic fortified town of Shanhaiguan, the main urban port area of Haigang, the classic beach resort of Beidaihe, and the newer coastal developments further south in Changli County.
Travelers are drawn here for a mix of culture and coastline — restored old towns and wall sections sit alongside sandy beaches and summer holiday infrastructure. While parts of the historic center were extensively rebuilt in the late 2000s, the result is a pleasant, walkable area that frames the older monuments. The city works well as a coastal break from Beijing or Tianjin, especially for those seeking a less polished, more locally flavored seaside experience.

Things to See
- Shanhaiguan Old Town — the historic eastern terminus of the Great Wall, with a restored fortified town and wall sections that extend toward the sea and into the mountains. Much of the area was reconstructed in the 1980s and again in 2008–09, creating a walkable, if sometimes quiet, historic district.
- Beidaihe Beach — Qinhuangdao’s main seaside resort area, known for its sandy beaches, summer tourism, and low- to mid-budget holiday infrastructure. Designated camping areas are available along the coast.
- Changli Coast (Nandaihe & Aranya) — newer resort developments and beach areas south of Beidaihe, including the Nandaihe arts-oriented scene and the upscale Aranya community.
- Haigang District — the main urban and port area, home to coastal attractions and the city’s working harbor.

- Summer (July–August) — peak beach season with the warmest temperatures, but also the highest humidity and rainfall; expect larger domestic tourist crowds.
- Autumn (September–October) — cooler and drier than summer, offering another good season for exploring the Great Wall and coastal areas without intense heat.
- Winter (December–February) — cold and dry, with temperatures below freezing; best avoided unless you prefer empty historic sites and off-season solitude.

- Fast trains from Beijing or Tianjin — D-trains take around two hours and cost ¥93 from Beijing; slower K and T trains are significantly cheaper but take 4–6 hours.
- Direct airport bus — a bus runs from Beijing Capital International Airport to Qinhuangdao in roughly four hours for ¥150, with more frequent departures than trains.
