About this place
Qingdao (青岛; Qīngdǎo; also known as Tsingtao), is regarded by some Chinese as one of the most beautiful and cleanest cities in China. With a population of around 7.2 million, it is one of the largest cities in Shandong Province. The name Qingdao means "The Blue/Green Island."
Qingdao is a city steeped in 20th-century history, shaped by a German colonial period that left a distinct mark on its architecture, including the historic center and train station. The famous Tsingtao Brewery was founded by German settlers in 1903. The city later saw Japanese occupation and, more recently, hosted the sailing events for the 2008 Summer Olympics.
While Qingdao has a long history, the eastern half of the city has been developed rapidly since 1993. It offers a relatively clean and orderly urban environment, though it lacks the intense street commerce and chaotic markets found in some other Chinese cities. Its seaside location provides pleasant scenery and several beaches.

Things to Do
- Visit the beaches: Qingdao has several wonderful beaches along the coast from Zhanqiao Pier to Shilaoren Beach in the eastern suburbs. Note that summer weekends can be very crowded, and litter can be a problem depending on tides and time of year.
- Explore Huangdao District (黄岛): Take a ferry from Qingdao port to this neighboring district, though be aware persistent fog can occasionally disrupt service.
- Attend the Qingdao International Beer Festival: Held every August, this festival features fresh Tsingtao beer and participation from many European breweries.
- Try fresh Tsingtao beer: Purchase fresh draft beer by weight (asking for "yi jin" gives you 500 g, or half a liter) from kegs outside restaurants and snack stores, often served in a plastic bag.
- Enjoy the nightlife: The Jiangxi Road strip near Hong Kong Middle Road offers many bars, while Zhonglian Plaza (中联广场) at Nanjing Road and Ningxia Road features large Chinese-style clubs. There are also many Korean-style bars in the Hong Kong Gardens area.
- Ride the metro: Qingdao's metro system has 8 lines (as of 2024) connecting tourist attractions, the old town, and the Laoshan Scenic Area.
