About this place
Pyongyang (평양, P'yŏngyang) is the capital of North Korea, situated on the Taedong River in the southwestern part of the country. Known as the "Capital of the Revolution," it functions as a showcase city where residents experience a markedly higher standard of living compared to elsewhere in North Korea. Many of the nation's tourist attractions are located here and typically form part of most travel itineraries.
Largely destroyed during the Korean War in 1952, the city was rebuilt as a model city to boost national morale. The resulting architecture features wide boulevards, abundant green space, and decorative elements in a Russian-influenced style. Streets are laid out in an orderly grid, and the city is divided into self-sufficient urban neighborhoods, each with similar amenities nearby. Due to movement restrictions, Pyongyang stands out among large Asian cities for being spacious, uncrowded, and quiet.
Historically, Pyongyang has been an important regional center for millennia, serving as a capital as early as the 300s and 400s. It was a significant commercial hub and, from the 16th through the 19th centuries, became a center for Christian missionary work in Asia. Following Korea's division after World War II, it became the temporary capital and later the permanent capital with the founding of North Korea.
