About this place

Last updated Jul 26, 2026

Pushkar is a small, sacred town in Rajasthan, built around the holy Pushkar Lake and famed for its rare Brahma Temple. The lake is ringed by ghats and temples, drawing a colorful mix of Hindu pilgrims, Indian travelers, and international backpackers. The town’s name means lotus flower — a nod to the legend that a lotus petal fell here from the hands of Brahma, creating the lake.

Today Pushkar buzzes with souvenir shops, vegetarian cafes, and rooftop guesthouses. Its compact, walkable center makes temple-hopping and ghat-side strolls easy. Come November, the famous Pushkar Camel Fair transforms the town with thousands of camels, horses, and cattle, plus a surge of pilgrims bathing in the lake during Kartik Purnima.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 26, 2026
  • Pushkar Camel Fair — held during the November full moon, this 14-day spectacle draws some 400,000 visitors and over 11,000 camels, horses, and cattle. Expect a vibrant mix of trading, cultural events, and pilgrimage energy.
  • Bathe in Pushkar Lake — pilgrims consider the lake’s waters holier and cleaner than the Ganges. Join the ritual bathing, especially around Kartik Purnima, though water quality standards aren't met.
  • Parikarma around the lake — walk the sacred circuit along the ghats and temples with devotees; a slow, meditative way to absorb Pushkar’s spiritual atmosphere.
  • Evening prayers at Varah Ghat — a mesmerizing bell-and-lamp ceremony that lights up the lakeside at dusk.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 26, 2026
  • Arriving by bus — direct buses connect Pushkar with Ajmer (30 min), Jaipur (3 hr), Udaipur (6 hr), and night buses to Delhi (10 hr). The train station in Ajmer has far better connections, then take a taxi or rickshaw to Pushkar.
  • Dress respectfully — the whole town is considered sacred; men should wear full-length pants and shirts, women full-length clothes, and everyone removes shoes near the lake stairs.
  • Temple etiquette — expect to remove shoes before entering any temple. If approached for an offering at the ghats, be polite but firm — it's not mandatory.
  • Avoid public alcohol and smoking — drinking in public is unacceptable, and though the smoking ban is lightly enforced, it's best to err on the side of respect.
  • Ignore touts and child beggars — don't engage with people who approach uninvited; giving money to begging children undermines local schooling efforts.
