About this place
Puerto Vallarta is a vibrant resort city on Mexico's Pacific Coast, set along the stunning Bay of Banderas. From the historic, cobblestoned Zona Romantica — the heart of its nightlife and dining — to the sprawling resort hotels to the north, the city offers a blend of Mexican charm and modern amenities. The famous Malecon, a bustling oceanfront boardwalk, is lined with shops, restaurants, and street performers.
Founded in 1851 as a small fishing village, Puerto Vallarta remained quiet until the 1960s when the filming of The Night of the Iguana put it on the world map. Today, it's a top destination for beachgoers, adventure seekers, and food lovers alike. The area is also known for being welcoming to LGBT travelers, with a lively scene in the Zona Romantica.
Beyond the city, the jungle-clad Sierra Madre mountains rise to the east, while the bay offers world-class whale watching, snorkeling, and sport fishing. English is widely spoken, and the local residents are generally friendly and helpful.
