About this place
Pudong (Chinese: 浦东 Pǔdōng) is a district of Shanghai on the eastern side of the Huang Pu River, an ultra-modern business hub full of high-rise buildings including several of the world's tallest.
The term "Pudong" can be somewhat ambiguous — this article covers the highly developed central area, while officials and media often use it for the much larger administrative district Pudong New Area. As part of Deng Xiao Ping's "Reform and Opening Up" program starting in the late 1970s, China introduced Special Economic Zones to encourage development and foreign investment. Pudong New Area has seen absolutely phenomenal development; until about 1990 it was mostly farmland and low-rise residential or factory areas.
The most highly developed area of Pudong is Lujiazui, a peninsula sticking out into the Huang Pu directly across from Downtown Shanghai's older center on the Puxi (west) side. Century Avenue is the main drag of Lujiazui, extending about 5 km inland to Century Park, and most of Pudong's tourist attractions are on or near that street.

Planning Tips
- Take the metro or ferry from the Bund to cross the Huang Pu River — it's cheap and efficient. The ferry costs only ¥2.
- Use the Maglev train from Pudong Airport (¥50 single, ¥40 with same-day flight ticket) for a 10-minute trip to Longyang Road Station, connecting to metro lines.
- Arrive early (around 08:30) if you need to visit the Shanghai Entry and Exit Bureau for visa services to minimize wait times.
