About this place
Ptolemaida is a town of about 37,000 people in West Macedonia, Greece, sitting on a plateau at 600 m altitude. It lies in the Eordaia plain, surrounded by the slopes of Mount Askio-Siniatsiko to the southwest and Mount Vermios to the northeast.
This is a highly industrialized area — the four local power plants produce roughly 70% of Greece's electrical power, fueled by the region's large lignite deposits. While not a traditional tourist hub, the town offers a glimpse of a working Greek community and a convenient base for exploring the mountainous countryside of the Kozani region.
