About this place
Pskov is one of Russia's oldest cities and the administrative heart of Pskov Oblast. Its centerpiece is a remarkably well-preserved ensemble of 12th- to 16th-century walls, towers, and defensive fortifications, alongside dozens of ancient churches that showcase the distinctive Pskov school of architecture. The city forms part of the Silver Ring of cultural and historical centers in Northwestern Russia.
What sets Pskov apart is not just the age of its monuments but their unique, asymmetrical character — temple designs that feel light and concise, fortifications that are impressively robust, and some of the country's oldest surviving fresco paintings. Walking the historic core rewards visitors with a strong sense of medieval Rus'.
