About this place

Last updated Jul 19, 2026

Probolinggo is a port city on the north coast of East Java, Indonesia, known for its large fishing industry and its role as the main gateway to the spectacular Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. For most visitors, the city is a practical transit hub and the most convenient base for organizing a trip to see the famous Mount Bromo sunrise.

Beyond its access to the national park, the city offers a few local cultural experiences, including traditional cattle races and river rafting, but it is not a major tourist destination in its own right.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 19, 2026
  • Bypass the travel agents — When arriving by bus, continue to the main terminal 6 km south-west of the center to buy tickets directly, avoiding commission-seeking touts.
  • Consider staying near Bromo — For the classic sunrise experience, sleeping closer to the park is preferable to avoid a very early and rushed drive from the city.
  • Use the train station — The centrally located station offers a heritage sight and comfortable connections to Surabaya, Yogyakarta, and Banyuwangi.
  • Minibus to Mount Bromo — Shared minibuses to Cemoro Lawang depart from outside the bus terminal, taking about 1.5 hours and leaving when full.
  • Try the local mangoes — Probolinggo is known for its sweet, green-skinned mangga manalagi; press them gently to check for ripeness.
