About this place
Pretoria is the administrative capital of South Africa, located in the Gauteng province. The city is known for its wide avenues lined with purple-flowered jacaranda trees and stately architecture, and it has a large student population that gives the center a lively atmosphere.
Founded in 1855, Pretoria became the capital of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (South African Republic) and later the administrative capital of the Union of South Africa in 1910, a role it still holds today as the administrative capital of the Republic of South Africa. The city is part of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality.
Today, Pretoria offers a mix of history, culture, and urban energy. It is well-connected by highways, the Gautrain high-speed rail link, and bus services to major cities across South Africa. While the city center can feel quiet after dark, major shopping and entertainment areas like Hatfield and Menlyn remain active well into the evening.
