About this place
Prato city is the second largest urban centre in Tuscany and the capital of the namesake province. Its roots reach back to the Etruscan civilisation, and today it balances a long artistic heritage with a lively, modern personality. The compact historic core holds centuries of architecture, while the surrounding province stretches into Apennine foothills and the Val di Bisenzio.
Getting here is straightforward: the A11 motorway has two dedicated exits, and the Bologna–Florence railway stops in Prato, as does the line from Lucca and Pistoia. This makes the city a practical base for exploring northern Tuscany without the peak-season intensity of its larger neighbours.
