About this place

Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Porto Velho is the capital of Rondônia, a young city born from the construction of the Madeira-Mamoré railway around 1910. Don't expect colonial architecture or old buildings — the draw here is the lively local culture and the chance to explore the surrounding Amazon landscape at your own pace. The city serves as a gateway between western Brazil, Bolivia, and river routes to Manaus.

While the commercial center along Avenida 7 de Setembro seems unremarkable at first glance, look further and you'll find a busy market, waterfront bars, and local flavors that reward unhurried visitors. Travelers should plan to rent a car and rely on word-of-mouth tips, as formal tourist infrastructure is minimal.

Things to Do

Last updated Jun 27, 2026
  • Eat açaí with guaraná and granola — this dark, sweet local fruit is a must-try; find it fresh at the weekly market or order it at central kiosks.
  • Dance at a local forró — on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, Mirante I & II hosts street parties where you can dance with locals; the area is closed to traffic and has security.
  • Drive west toward Candeias — rent a car and follow BR-364 to see where Porto Velho began; you can also visit the Santo Antonio waterfall or continue by ferry to Humaitá on the road to Manaus.
  • Join the Sunday market (Feira Cai na Água) — starting as early as 5 AM, this lively market lets you taste tacacá, vatapá, sugarcane juice, and more local specialties right at the source.
  • Take a boat to Manaus — hammock-class or cabin voyages run two to three times a week; negotiate directly with the captain for the best price and bring your own hammock for the journey.

  • Caixas D'água (Three Water Towers) — Porto Velho's iconic landmark, originally built for the Bolivia railway; visit at night when illumination makes for striking photos.
  • Casa da Cultura — a cultural center near the water towers that hosts rotating exhibitions by local artists and occasional showcases of regional traditions.
  • Beira Rio promenade — at the end of Avenida 7 de Setembro, a string of bars overlook the Rio Madeira; a perfect spot for sunset views.

  • May through September — the driest and most comfortable season; average temperatures around 26.6°C and low daily rainfall of 1.7 mm make this the prime travel window.
  • Sunday mornings — regardless of season, the Feira Cai na Água market peaks early; arrive by 7 AM for the freshest produce and liveliest atmosphere.
  • August–September for river sunsets — clearing skies and lower river levels create ideal conditions for evenings along the Beira Rio promenade.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 27, 2026
  • Rent a car from a trusted agency — Hertz, Localiza, and Avis are located near the bus station; avoid renting from private individuals to stay insured and protected.
  • Bring your own hammock for boat travel — hammock-class voyages to Manaus are cheaper and more comfortable when you supply your own bedding.
  • Negotiate directly with boat captains — bypass the agents at the harbor entrance and deal with the captain for a better cabin or hammock price.
  • Check safety conditions before exploring on foot — stick to well-lit, populated areas and avoid the harbor zone with valuables; ask locals about current safe zones.
  • Pack for tropical humidity — lightweight, quick-dry clothing and mosquito repellent are essential year-round, especially if visiting outside the dry-season window.
