About this place
Porto-Novo, Benin's capital, is a relaxed coastal city of about 250,000 people that offers a welcome change of pace from bustling Cotonou. Named by the Portuguese in the 1500s, the city still carries visible Portuguese influences alongside its West African character. It sits just an hour from Cotonou by car and 20 minutes from the beach, making it an accessible base for exploring southeastern Benin.
The city center is compact and manageable, with zemidjan (motorcycle taxis) providing the easiest way to get around. The Ouando district, 3 km north of the center, adds a lively dimension with its large market and nightlife scene.
