About this place
Podgorica is the capital and largest city of Montenegro, with a laid-back Mediterranean atmosphere and a population of about 186,000. Set in the central lowlands between the Dinaric Alps and Lake Scutari, it is not a classic sightseeing city, but its mix of Ottoman heritage, mid-century rebuilds, and modern development gives it an interesting character.
Much of the city was reconstructed after World War II in the Eastern bloc style, so you will find a planned, contemporary urban core rather than old-town cobblestones. Yet Podgorica's appeal lies in its lively café culture, emerging nightlife, and role as a convenient base for day trips to the coast and mountains — both within roughly an hour's drive.

Planning Tips
- Getting in from the airport — the cheapest route is the train (€1.20, 8 min) from Aerodrom station, a 1 km walk from the terminal. Shuttle buses run to flight times, and taxis cost €12–15 to the centre; always agree a price upfront.
- Using local buses — buy a single-ride ticket from the driver for €0.90; Google Maps shows routes and schedules.
- Taxis and ride apps — over 20 taxi companies operate around town with fares around €0.40/km; the TeslaGo app works like Uber with Tesla vehicles.
- Cash and cards — the currency is the euro; ATMs are widespread in the centre, and upscale venues accept major credit and debit cards.
- Eating out — fine restaurants cluster in the old centre and around Roman Square; for cheap eats try pleskavica (Balkan-style hamburger) at popular grill spots.
