About this place
Piraeus is the ancient port of Athens and remains the primary gateway to the Aegean Islands and eastern Mediterranean. It is a sprawling, working harbor city with deep historical roots, having been founded in the early 5th century BC as a prototype port with three deep-water harbors. Today it serves domestic routes to most Aegean islands and international destinations including Cyprus and the Middle East.
The port zone is huge, so check your gate number in advance and allow plenty of time to navigate between departure points — it can take 30 minutes to walk from one end to the other. Passenger facilities have improved significantly, with air-conditioned waiting tents and free Wi-Fi around departure areas. The center and marina districts are walkable and lively, while the outer industrial and residential neighborhoods are less geared toward visitors.

- Island day trips — Frequent ferries connect to the Saronic Gulf Islands; Aegina is an easy and rewarding day trip from the main port.
- Waterfront dining — Numerous fish bistros (psarotaverna) line the Pasalimani and Mikrolimano bays, offering fresh seafood with harbor views.
- Shopping on Sotiros Dios — This mostly pedestrianized street runs uphill from the port to the marina and is the main apparel shopping area, with plenty of cafes along the way.
- Scenic trolleybus ride — Trolleybus 20 runs from the port to Passalimani and around the hill of Castella, offering a scenic loop and terminating near the Peace & Friendship Stadium and Karaiskakis Stadium.

- Antiquities of central Athens — An easy day trip via Metro; the Acropolis, Ancient Agora, and Plaka district are a short ride from Piraeus station.
- Zea and Mikrolimano marinas — These smaller, picturesque harbors are lined with yachts, cafes, and seafood tavernas, offering a more relaxed contrast to the main commercial port.
- Castella hill — A scenic neighborhood with neoclassical houses and views over the Saronic Gulf, accessible on foot or by trolleybus.

- Mid-April to late June — The most pleasant window, with average temperatures around 21°C, very little rain (0.6 mm), and comfortable sunshine before peak summer crowds arrive.
- Late August to late October — Another excellent period with averages near 22.2°C and similarly dry, sunny conditions; the sea remains warm for island hopping.
- Avoid peak summer if crowds concern you — July and early August bring the highest passenger volumes and temperatures that can reach 39.8°C, making the port area feel particularly hectic.

Planning Tips
- Check your ferry gate in advance — The port is enormous; verify your departure gate number before arriving and allow at least 15–30 minutes to navigate the port zone.
- Use the free shuttle bus — A free shuttle runs from the Metro station around the north side of the port to ships bound for Crete, the Eastern Aegean, and the Dodecanese.
- Beware of unlicensed taxis and port scams — Unofficial taxi drivers at ferry arrivals have a poor reputation, and luggage-handling scams are reported at boarding lines. Use licensed cabs and manage your own bags.
- Watch for traffic near the quays — Cars and trucks frequently share the pavement with pedestrians near the ferry docks; stay alert when walking with luggage.
- Public transit tickets are time-based — Metro and bus tickets (€1.20) allow unlimited connections within 90 minutes, making combined transit around Piraeus and into Athens affordable.
