About this place

Last updated Jun 14, 2026

Pingdingshan, known locally as Eagle City, is a prefecture-level city in central-southern Henan and a significant industrial center built on rich coal reserves. Once a core part of China’s energy base, it’s now gradually pivoting toward tourism and ecological restoration, set against the backdrop of the Funiu Mountains to the west and the open Huang-Huai Plain to the east. The city’s name means “mountain with a flat top,” a reference to the distinctive plateau rising at its northeastern edge.

For visitors, Pingdingshan offers an off-the-tourist-track look at daily life in a Chinese regional hub. The compact city center is walkable and easy to navigate, with most activity concentrated around Zhongxing Road, Tiyu Road, and Kaiyuan Road. While urban attractions are modest, the surrounding region opens up dramatically — Mount Yao (Yaoshan) and Shiren Mountain provide hiking and natural scenery, while Zhaoping Lake draws cyclists and families looking for waterside leisure.

Culturally, the area carries deep roots stretching back to the Spring and Autumn Period. The Xiangshan Buddhist Temple, featuring China’s first thousand-hand Buddha sculpture, remains an active religious site, and archaeological signs of early agriculture remind travelers of the land’s ancient history. Come with realistic expectations: this is not a polished resort city, but a practical base for regional exploration, and its straightforward, provincial character is precisely the appeal.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 14, 2026
  • Getting in — Pingdingshan lacks its own airport; land at Zhengzhou and continue by intercity bus (approx. ¥70) or high-speed rail (about 50 minutes).
  • Getting around — taxis start at ¥6 and ride-hailing apps work with a local SIM; city buses like G60 cover long routes for just ¥1.
  • Packing for the season — light layers and a jacket for spring/autumn; heavy coat, scarf, and warm accessories for winter; umbrella and sunscreen essential for summer.
  • Dining strategy — stick with local Chinese food for the best value and authenticity; street stalls and small restaurants serve standout hulatang (spicy soup) and huimian (noodle soup).
  • Payment readiness — mobile payments via Alipay are the norm; downloading and registering the app before arrival simplifies daily transactions.
  • Language prep — carry a translation app or key phrases; few people outside major hotels speak English, and menus rarely include translations.
  • Temple access — for Xiangshan Temple, buses #8 or #16 connect from the city; admission is ¥5, and a small motorcar can take you to the summit (approx. ¥6).
