About this place
Phú Quốc is a large tropical island in the Gulf of Thailand, accessible only from Vietnam, and ringed with some of the country's most beautiful beaches. Known historically for its production of world-renowned fish sauce and high-quality pepper, the island is now in a period of rapid transformation, with major private investment driving the development of high-rise resorts, new towns, and ambitious entertainment complexes.
This change means a stay here can shift dramatically depending on where you base yourself. The island offers everything from the walkable, relaxed atmosphere of the original Long Beach area to the enormous scale of new developments in the north and south, including a safari park, casino, and a growing network of free electric buses connecting key points.

Things to Do
- Scuba diving and snorkeling — Explore two distinct areas: shallow northern sites (max 10 m) perfect for beginners with corals and rock formations, or up to 20 deeper southern sites around the An Thoi Islands (10–40 m) with a better chance of spotting larger marine life, though currents can be stronger.
- Motorbike exploration — Rent a scooter for the day to tackle the island's red dirt roads and discover quiet beaches, dense forest tracks, and fishing villages. Roads are often unpaved and potholed, but punctures are easily fixed by friendly locals for a small fee.
- Island boat tours — Most resorts run or can arrange charter boat trips to the southern An Thoi archipelago. These full-day excursions typically include snorkelling gear, lunch, and hotel transfers.
- Visit a pepper farm — Tour a local farm to see pepper vines growing on long poles and pick up fresh pepper products as a distinctive, practical souvenir.
- Relax on Long Beach — Base yourself at one of the central resorts where you can walk to restaurants, bars, and services, filling several days with nothing more than beach time and fresh seafood.

Things to See
- Ganh Dau — Ride the quiet roads around the northwest corner of the island to this village, where dozens of large, brightly painted fishing boats return in the afternoon, creating a photogenic scene.
- Pearl farms — Stop at a farm on the west side of the island, about 10 km south of Dương Đông, to learn about cultivation and browse a shop and café.
- Fish sauce factories — Several producers welcome visitors to see how the island's most famous export is made; factory visits are often included in organized island tours.
- An Thoi fishing port — At the southern tip, watch the local fishing fleet and hire a boat to reach the small islands just offshore, a gateway for snorkelling trips.
- Scenic northwest coastline — The route to the westernmost shore rewards riders with quiet beaches, forested stretches, and café stops overlooking the mouth of the Cửa Cạn River.

Best Time to Visit
- December to March (high season) — The most reliable stretch of sunny, dry weather with lower humidity and comfortable average highs around 31°C. Book accommodation well in advance, as this is the busiest time.
- April to May (shoulder season) — Temperatures climb slightly and humidity increases, but tourist numbers drop. A good window if you're willing to risk a few showers for fewer crowds.
- Late November and early April (transition weeks) — Often deliver pleasant conditions with thinner tourist traffic than the core December–January period, while still falling within the favourable weather window.
- July to September (low season) — The monsoon brings the heaviest rainfall and highest humidity, making diving, beach days, and road exploration less appealing, though room prices are at their lowest.

Planning Tips
- Book ahead in high season — Unlike many Southeast Asian destinations, affordable accommodation often sells out in January and February, so secure your room before arriving.
- Use the free electric bus network — Green buses and an app (VinBus) connect the airport, ferry pier, Dương Đông, and Grand World. Airport route #17 is frequent; the southern #19 loop runs less often, so double-check direction and timing.
- Rent a motorbike for flexibility — Scooters cost around 120,000–150,000 dong per day with minimal paperwork. Expect unpaved, potholed roads and a relaxed approach to traffic rules; carry your hotel’s phone number and a basic first-aid kit.
- Negotiate full-day taxi or jeep hires — For multi-stop island tours, agree on a flat rate upfront. A half-island loop might be around 650,000 dong; a jeep with driver runs about US$30 for six hours.
- Plan boat and diving trips around the season — Northern dive sites are calmer and shallower for beginners; southern sites offer more variety but can be rough. Snorkelling tours are a pleasant day out but manage expectations for coral and fish sightings.
