About this place
Philadelphia — often called Philly — is where American democracy was born. In Independence Hall and nearby taverns, the nation's founders planned and launched the American Revolution and drafted both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. The city served as the young nation's capital from 1790 to 1800 and remains a top destination for history enthusiasts.
Founded by William Penn in 1681, Philadelphia translates to "City of Brotherly Love." It has a legacy as a seat of freedom and religious tolerance. Today, it is the largest city in Pennsylvania and the sixth-largest in the United States, sitting on the west bank of the Delaware River. The broader Delaware Valley metropolitan area is home to more than six million people and extends into parts of New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland.
Beyond its revolutionary history, Philadelphia offers a vibrant cultural scene. It's known as a "city of firsts" — the first library (1731), first hospital (1751), first medical school (1765), first zoo (1874), and more. The city is also famous as the setting for the Rocky films, with the iconic "Rocky Steps" outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art drawing visitors from around the world.

Planning Tips
- Consider buying a Philadelphia CityPASS if you plan to visit multiple major attractions — it offers discounted admission and expedited entry.
- Use SEPTA public transit for getting around; a One-Day Convenience Pass ($7.50 as of Feb 2026) covers 8 rides on buses, subways, and trolleys.
- If driving, park at a SEPTA regional rail station lot ($1–$2/day) and ride into Center City rather than dealing with expensive downtown garages.
- Many of the city's best restaurants are BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle). Pick up wine at a state-run Fine Wine & Good Spirits store or beer at a local bottle shop before dinner.
- For budget travel from nearby cities like New York or Washington, D.C., consider low-cost bus services like Megabus or BoltBus rather than Amtrak.
- Booking a hotel in Center City — especially near the Convention Center, Old City, or Rittenhouse Square — puts you within walking distance of most major sights.
