About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Petrozavodsk is the capital of the Republic of Karelia, set on the western shore of vast Lake Onega. Founded by Peter the Great in 1703 as an iron foundry, it grew from an industrial settlement into a planned Neoclassical city that still serves as the region’s administrative and cultural hub. Today it’s a compact, walkable centre with a population just over 260,000, blending Karelian, Finnish, and Russian influences.

The city makes a practical base for exploring southern Karelia and the open-air museum at Kizhi Island. Its manageable size means the main sights, lakeside embankment, and railway station are all within a pleasant walk of each other.

  • Walk the Lake Onega embankment — the shorefront promenade is the city’s social heart, best enjoyed on long summer evenings.
  • Take a day trip to Kizhi Island — the Kizhi Petrozavodsk Museum facilitates visits to the famous open-air collection of wooden architecture.
  • Attend a performance at the main theatre — the building itself is a Neoclassical gem, and the square and adjoining park are lovely for a pre-show stroll.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Arrive by train from St. Petersburg — the Lastochka Premium takes under five hours; slower overnight options and connections from Moscow and Murmansk are also available.
  • Book Kizhi visits in advance — the island museum is the standout excursion and logistics are easier when arranged ahead of peak season.
  • Dress for changeable weather — even in summer, cloud cover can be heavy; layers and a waterproof layer are useful.
  • Plan for long drives — if arriving by car via the Kola Highway, note that petrol stations can be spaced far apart across Karelia.
  • Check current bus schedules — international services from Finland have been disrupted since 2022, so confirm routing and availability before relying on cross-border coaches.
