About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Petrópolis sits in the lush, forested hills of the Serra dos Órgãos, where the Quitandinha and Piabanha rivers meet. A longtime summer retreat, it earned the nickname "The Imperial City" as the chosen escape of Emperor Dom Pedro II, who built a palace, mansions, and a cathedral in this scenic valley.

Today visitors come for the cooler highland climate and the well-preserved Imperial history. The former Summer Palace is the star attraction — now a dedicated museum of Brazilian imperial heritage — while the surrounding mountains make a refreshing counterpart to Rio de Janeiro's coastline.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Arrive on the left side of the bus — When traveling from Rio de Janeiro, a seat on the left offers the best views of the mountains on the way into town.
  • Pay in cash on local buses — Local buses 100 or 010 connect the Bingen bus station to the center; the fare is around R$4 and is paid directly to the driver.
  • Explore the center on foot — All primary historic sights are clustered around the city center, so comfortable walking shoes are your most useful gear.
  • Call a ride-hailing car — Uber is recommended for taxis, providing a straightforward option for reaching the Centro Histórico from the outlying bus terminal.
  • Check restaurant days carefully — A number of dining spots are closed Monday through Wednesday or even Monday through Thursday, so it's wise to confirm hours before heading out.
