About this place
Peterborough blends a historic core with the energy of a 1960s New Town. Its centerpiece is the medieval Cathedral, built from the 12th century and the burial place of two British monarchs. The city grew from Roman-era brickworks and later became a hub for engineering firms like Perkins, while clay pits left a necklace of lagoons across the landscape.
Modern Peterborough was shaped by London overspill. Three greenfield villages—Bretton, Orton, and Paston—were planned around the older city, which remains largely intact and walkable. Today the city balances service industries with a modest cultural scene and good transport links.
