About this place

Last updated Jun 11, 2026

Perth is the capital and largest city of Western Australia, a vibrant and cosmopolitan city despite being one of the world's most isolated urban centers — it sits over 2,100 km from Adelaide, separated by the vast Nullarbor Plain. With a population of over 2.3 million (2023), it's Australia's fourth-largest city, spread across a flat coastal plain dissected by the Swan River and bordered by the Indian Ocean.

Originally established as the Swan River Colony in 1829, Perth's history includes Indigenous Nyoongar stewardship spanning tens of thousands of years, followed by convict-era construction that shaped its early architecture, and a gold rush in the 1890s that sparked a boom. Today, the city's economy is closely tied to the mining industry, and its skyline is dominated by the headquarters of major mining companies. Perth's relatively close proximity to Southeast Asia and Africa has fostered a culturally diverse population — slightly less than half of its residents were born outside Australia — and this diversity is reflected in the city's rich culinary scene.

Perth remains one of Australia's fastest-growing cities, balancing modern development with green spaces and historic districts. Its layout and climate make it ideal for outdoor activities, from its world-class beaches to expansive parks and a thriving arts and music scene.

  • Play golf — Notable courses include Royal Perth, Maylands, and Mount Lawley.
  • Walk or cycle along the Swan River — A favorite among locals is the ride along the north side of the river between the city and Nedlands; allow about 60 minutes round trip.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 11, 2026
  • Sun protection is essential — apply SPF 30+ sunscreen, wear a hat and sunglasses, and carry water, especially in warmer months.
  • Use public transport — the Free Transit Zone in the CBD and CAT buses are free. A SmartRider card or contactless credit/debit card makes travel easy; always tag on and off.
  • Rent a car to explore beyond the city — no tolls on Perth's freeways, but parking in the CBD can cost up to $40 per day on weekdays. Consider parking at a train station and riding in.
  • Book accommodation in advance during peak periods (summer holidays, major events) to secure your preferred location.
  • Check opening hours — many shops and restaurants close on Good Friday, Anzac Day (April 25), and Christmas Day. Public transport runs on reduced timetables on public holidays.
  • Carry insect repellent on summer evenings; hay fever sufferers should pack antihistamines if visiting during wildflower season (spring).
