About this place

Last updated Jun 14, 2026

Perm is a large industrial city of around one million people, spread along the banks of the Kama River at the western edge of the Ural Mountains. Many travelers pass through on the Trans-Siberian Railway, but those who pause will discover a destination rich in Soviet-era history, riverside walks, and a developing cultural scene. Its name, related to the "Permian" geological period, means "Far-away Land," a fitting title for a city that was closed to the outside world for much of the 20th century.

Founded in 1723 to exploit the region's mineral wealth, Perm later became a major artillery manufacturing center during the Soviet period. Its past as a "closed city" and a "Gateway to the Gulag" is visible today through museums and outdoor exhibits. The city has rapidly modernized since opening in 1990, blending its heavy industrial legacy with new shopping, dining, and entertainment venues.
