About this place
Pereira is the capital of Colombia's Risaralda department, set in a valley descending from the western Andes. As the vibrant center of the Zona Cafetera, it is a lively university city of about 482,000 people. Its slogan, "Pereira con Vida," reflects the youthful energy pulsing through its avenues, coffee shops, and nightlife. Strategically positioned inside the triangle of Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali, Pereira makes an excellent base for exploring the wider coffee region.

Planning Tips
- Master the Megabus — Pereira has a Bus Rapid Transit system with dedicated lanes; buy a 'Megatarjeta' card at any station for fast, clean rides around the main avenues.
- Carry small bills for taxis — minimum fares start at COP$6,000, and drivers often lack change for large denominations.
- Tap water is safe — the local water is exceptionally pure; there is no need to buy bottled water, though this advice does not apply everywhere in Colombia.
- Day-trip to Santa Rosa de Cabal — cheap, frequent minibuses cover the 15-minute journey, famous for chorizos and hot springs.
