About this place

Last updated Jul 19, 2026

Pemba sits on the southern shore of one of the world's largest natural bays in northern Mozambique's Cabo Delgado province. It's the region's most important hub, home to around 100,000 people and a growing number of visitors drawn by its Portuguese colonial architecture, waterfront restaurants, and easy access to the Quirimbas Archipelago. Built over rolling hills dotted with thick baobab trees, the town retains a lived-in, authentic feel alongside steady tourism infrastructure improvements, including international flights.

The town was founded in 1904 as Porto Amelia and renamed Pemba after independence in 1975. Today it serves as a gateway for diving, snorkeling, and fishing on coral reefs just offshore, with warm, calm waters and abundant marine life. Beyond the beach, traditional fishing villages, craft markets, and lakes teem with birdlife offer a window into local culture.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 19, 2026
  • Scuba diving and snorkeling — Wimbe Beach reefs and the coral shelf near the Londo peninsula shelter sea turtles, Napoleon wrasses, potato bass, and the rare oceanic sunfish. Conditions are diveable year-round with water temperatures of 26°C to 29°C.
  • Whale watching — Humpback and Southern Right whales migrate through these waters from June to November. During peak months (July–October), their songs are often audible underwater and breaching can be seen from shore.
  • Big-game fishing — From late August to mid-December, the Lazarus Banks {{convert|75|nmi|km|abbr=on}} offshore deliver exceptional catches of Giant Trevally, tuna, sailfish, and marlin. Liveaboard trips are available through the Nautilus Hotel.
  • Nkwita Lake birding — About an hour's drive from Pemba, this permanent wetland attracts fish eagles, storks, raptors, and the rare Dickinson's kestrel among dense reed-nesting colonies. Day trips can be arranged locally.
  • Jungle hiking in Ngezi Forest — Guided walks cross from the main road through dense forest to the northern beaches on nearby Ibo Island. Short and long hikes are available with local guides.

Things to See

Last updated Jul 19, 2026
  • Ponta Romero Lighthouse and Slave Trade Fort — An open-air historical monument on the bay where enslaved people were once auctioned; it also serves as a lookout point for incoming ships.
  • Paquitequete fishing village — A traditional settlement just beyond the lighthouse where dhows are built and repaired by hand using centuries-old techniques, offering a glimpse of daily life unchanged for generations.
  • Nacole Baobab — Found within the Pemba Dive & Bush Camp Resort, this ancient hollow tree is large enough to walk inside. It sheltered refugees during wartime and is surrounded by mangrove estuaries and savanna bush.
  • Maconde Arts and Crafts — The Maconde people are celebrated sculptors known for expressive helmet masks and wooden figures, often used in traditional festivals and ceremonies. Authentic pieces are sold at local markets.
  • Ibo Island and the Quirimbas Archipelago — Quipaco Island lies just 20 km north of Pemba, and the Quirimbas National Park boundary is only 13 km away, making day trips into this UNESCO-worthy seascape easy to arrange.

Best Time to Visit

See Ranked Windows ↑
  • September–November — The most comfortable window overall: daytime highs average 25.7°C, rainfall is near zero, and cloud cover stays around 31%. Prime fishing season overlaps, and whale watching peaks in September–October.
  • April–June — Another excellent shoulder window with averages around 25°C, very low precipitation, and similar sunshine. The landscape is still lush from the rainy season, and crowds are light.
  • July–August — Winter months bring the coolest water temperatures (around 24°C) but also the most intense humpback whale activity and clear diving conditions. A shortie wetsuit is recommended.
  • Avoid December–March for reliable sunshine — While warm and green, these months see irregular heavy rains and monsoon winds that can limit marine excursions and road travel.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 19, 2026
  • Carry small US dollar notes sparingly — Banks often reject small-denomination USD; they're useful for short taxi rides and market purchases, but avoid relying on them for larger transactions.
  • Negotiate firmly at curio stalls — Start at roughly a quarter of the asking price and settle at no more than 60%. Be prepared to walk away, especially if vendors offer shells, coral, ivory, or turtle shell products, which are illegal.
  • Use hotel shuttles when possible — Some hotels provide free airport transfers, but early-morning pickups (around 04:00) may incur a charge. Confirm rates when booking.
  • Hitchhiking and public buses are functional — Main routes have regular minibus service at low cost, and hitching around town is generally considered safe. Always agree on a taxi fare before starting the ride, and expect roughly US$7 for a 15 km trip.
  • Allow time for island logistics — Day trips to Ibo Island or Quirimbas National Park require arranging guides or transfers in advance; accommodations on the coast can help organize these.
