About this place
Pathein is a peaceful delta port city about 190 km west of Yangon, serving as the capital of Ayeyarwady Division. It has long been an important rice milling and export hub, built beside the scenic Pathein River waterfront. The town is compact and walkable, with a population around 237,000.
The city is best known for its colourful handmade umbrellas, a craft tradition spanning over two centuries. Travellers often pass through Pathein en route to nearby beaches like Chaung Tha and Ngwe Saung, or use it as a quieter stopover on longer overland journeys.

Things to See
- Pathein umbrella workshops — small family-run workshops that have produced hand-painted umbrellas for more than 200 years. Visitors can see the crafting process, though rainy-season outdoor drying may limit viewing. Umbrellas are inexpensive, typically a few US dollars each.
- Scenic river waterfront — the town's riverside setting offers a relaxed atmosphere for strolling and informal dining, with beer gardens overlooking the water.
- Buddhist temples — several Buddhist temples dot the city, reflecting the local spiritual character and offering quiet spaces to explore on foot.
- Karen village across the river — a short local ferry ride takes visitors to a Karen community on the opposite bank, providing a small glimpse into rural delta life.

Best Time to Visit
- November to March (dry, comfortable months) — this is the best window for pleasant sightseeing, with moderate temperatures, very little rain, and plenty of sun. Ideal for walking the waterfront and visiting umbrella workshops.
- December to February (coolest period) — overnight temperatures dip to around 11.5°C, bringing the most refreshing conditions of the year for outdoor exploring.
- Avoid mid-April to October if rain is a concern — heavy tropical rainfall and higher humidity can disrupt travel flexibility and reduce the appeal of walking around town.

Planning Tips
- Use Pathein as a beach stopover — combine Pathein with a trip to Chaung Tha or Ngwe Saung, which are only 1½–2 hours away by bus or pickup. Combining tickets from Yangon through Pathein to the beach can be cheaper.
- Carry small kyat for transport — motorbike taxi fares around town are around 1,000 kyat per trip, and pickup rides to or from bus drop-off points are similar. Have small notes handy.
- Plan onward bus connections carefully — if arriving from Ngapali via Ngathaingchaung, the full journey can take over 11 hours. Start early in the morning to avoid arriving late.
- Expect less umbrella workshop activity in the rainy season — the waterproofing process needs sunny days, so viewing may be limited if visiting during wet months.
