About this place
Parauapebas is a frontier city in Pará, a place that barely existed before the world’s largest iron ore mine at Serra dos Carajás began operating in the early 1980s. It still carries the spirit of pioneers and adventurers drawn by the vast mineral riches of the region.
Today the city serves as a gateway to one of the planet’s most significant mining projects and a remote outpost where travel feels genuinely intrepid. Infrastructure is modest, and visitors should come prepared for long overland journeys through the Brazilian interior.

Planning Tips
- Overland connections — use Marabá as the bus hub for links to Belém, Imperatriz, or Brasília; build in extra buffer time if traveling during the rainy season.
- Train to São Luís — a thrice-weekly passenger service runs along the mining railway; at 16 hours it’s a slow, memorable option rather than a quick transfer.
- Self-sufficiency — bring cash and supplies; services in this frontier city are basic and geared toward the mining workforce.
