About this place
Oyo is an ancient city in South West Nigeria, known as New Oyo (Ọ̀yọ́ Àtìbà) — the historic capital of the remnant Oyo Empire. It sits in a region of rolling hills and rivers that rise from about 500 meters in the south to over 1,200 meters in the north. The city is predominantly Yoruba, and the Alaafin of Oyo remains its traditional ruler.
The wider Oyo State is bordered by Ogun, Kwara, Osun, and the Republic of Benin. The landscape shifts from rainforest in the south to guinea savannah in the north, with rivers like the Ogun and Osun originating from its highlands. This fertile setting supports crops from cocoa and cashews to yam and maize.
