Ōta is a city in Gunma Prefecture, about 80 kilometers north of Tokyo. It is best known as the home of Subaru Motors, and that automotive heritage shapes daily life — it has one of Japan's highest ratios of vehicles per person. The compact downtown clusters around the train station, while outer neighborhoods hold temples, castle ruins, and a small hot-spring area.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 19, 2026
  • Getting there — The Tobu Isesaki Line connects Tokyo's Asakusa station directly to Ōta; limited express trains run twice an hour in the morning and evening, and hourly at midday.
  • Getting around — Renting a car is the most practical way to reach dispersed sights; Toyota Rent-a-car has two locations near the station.
  • Mobile connectivity — Coverage can be inconsistent, especially for 4G networks. Carrying SIM cards from multiple providers (MTN, Airtel, Glo, 9Mobile) improves reliability.
  • Local specialty — Try Ōta-yakisoba, the city's signature noodle dish.
