About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Ostrava is the Czech Republic’s third-largest city, straddling the historic border of Moravia and Silesia with a population of around 290,000. Once defined entirely by heavy industry, it has transformed into a destination where former factories and mining sites now house cultural venues and attractions.

A compact centre gives way to sprawling neighbourhoods, and the city acts as a convenient gateway between Prague, Brno, Katowice, and the Tatra mountains. Its famous Stodolní Street packs more than 60 bars and restaurants into a few blocks, drawing visitors looking for a lively, local atmosphere.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Stodolní Street — Explore the country’s largest strip of bars and pubs, where drinks are cheaper than in Prague and the vibe stays proudly local.
  • FC Baník Ostrava match — Catch a top-tier football game at Městský Stadion south of the centre; the atmosphere captures the city’s working-class soul.
  • Skalka Family Park — Combine zoo visits with summer amusements or winter skiing and tubing, all in one family-friendly complex.
  • JOJO Park — An indoor children’s amusement centre with food and drinks, ideal for rainy-day energy-burning.
  • Ostravar brewery experience — Seek out the local beer brewed since 1897; many pubs pour it fresh and it’s a natural companion to Czech pub classics.

  • Book trains online for savings — Advance fares on Czech Railways or RegioJet can be much cheaper than station prices, especially on the Prague–Ostrava route.
  • Stay near the old town — Choose accommodation within walking distance of the historic centre to minimise reliance on transit, especially if you plan to enjoy Stodolní Street’s nightlife.
  • Pick up an Ostrava!!! card — Available free from select hotels for stays of two nights or more; it offers discounts on several tourist attractions.
  • Try local flavours — Seek out Ostravar beer and the city’s sweet wafer-tube treat, katowicke rurki, from neighbourhood confectioners on Hornická street.
