About this place

Last updated Aug 2, 2026

Osnabrück is a mid-sized city in Lower Saxony, tucked into a valley between the Wiehen Hills and the Teutoburg Forest. Home to about 165,000 residents and over 22,000 students, it balances a strong industrial base in the automobile, paper, steel, and grocery sectors with a lively, youthful atmosphere. The city’s historic core was largely destroyed during World War II, but its Altstadt (old town) was carefully rebuilt using original medieval designs, giving today’s visitors a charming glimpse of the past.

Culturally and historically, Osnabrück belongs to the region of Westphalia. It played a key role in European history as the site where the Peace of Westphalia was negotiated, ending the Thirty Years’ War, and later adopted the title Friedensstadt ("city of peace"). The city is also the birthplace of anti-war novelist Erich-Maria Remarque and painter Felix Nussbaum, further cementing its reputation as a place of reflection and creativity.

Planning Tips

Last updated Aug 2, 2026
  • Arrive by train when possible — Osnabrück is a rail junction with direct express services from major cities; book ahead for cheaper Deutsche Bahn fares or check Dutch NS for deals from Amsterdam.
  • Use buses and bikes locally — The Stadwerke Osnabrück bus network covers the city well, including night buses on weekends; cycling is popular, but stay alert on narrow shared lanes.
  • Watch for pedestrian zones — The city centre has areas where bicycles and cars are forbidden; riding where prohibited can result in a fine, so check signage carefully.
  • Plan your food crawl — In addition to classic German Gasthäuser, budget-friendly döner stands are widespread and ideal for a quick, filling meal between sights.
