About this place
Oshawa is a city of about 160,000 people on the eastern edge of the Greater Toronto Area in southern Ontario. Its name comes from the Ojibwa term for "the crossing place," and for more than a century the community was synonymous with automobile manufacturing. General Motors Canada drove the local economy from 1918 onward, shaping Oshawa’s identity alongside the legacy of Col. Sam McLaughlin, who built both the McLaughlin Motor Car Company and the Canadian Automotive Museum.
Today the city is reinventing itself as an education and health sciences hub. Three post‑secondary institutions call Oshawa home — Durham College, Trent University Durham, and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology — and it is also the site of Lakeridge Health Oshawa, the Lakeridge Health and Education Research Network, and the Oshawa Clinic, Canada’s largest multi‑specialty group practice. Together the historic manufacturing roots and the modern campus-and-hospital base give visitors a mix of industrial heritage attractions and youthful energy.
