About this place

Last updated Jun 10, 2026

Osaka is the vibrant, down-to-earth heart of Japan's Kansai region and the largest city in the Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto metropolitan area, home to over 17 million people. While Tokyo is known for its reserved formality, Osakans pride themselves on being warm, friendly, and colorful. The local rallying cry is kuidaore — "eat yourself into ruin" — reflecting the city's legendary food, drink, and entertainment scene. Historically, Osaka was once Japan's capital under the name Naniwa and later served as "the Nation's Kitchen," the crucial hub for rice distribution. Today, it's the country's best place to eat, drink, and party.

The city is organized around two main poles: the business-oriented, upscale Umeda (Kita) in the north and the lively, proletarian entertainment district of Namba (Minami) in the south. The tree-lined Midōsuji boulevard connects the two, and the JR Osaka Loop Line encircles the city center. Osaka's fearless entrepreneurial spirit is still very much alive, making it a fantastic base for exploring the entire Kansai region.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 10, 2026
  • Getting from the airport: Kansai International Airport is the main gateway. From Itami Airport, buses to central Osaka start around ¥500–600; taxis cost about ¥4,000 plus tolls.
  • Shinkansen travel: From Tokyo, Nozomi trains take ~2 hr 15 min (¥14,720). Japan Rail Pass holders can use Hikari and Kodama services; Nozomi requires a supplement.
  • Budget bus option: Highway buses from Tokyo to Osaka can be as cheap as ¥4,000–6,000 for daytime trips. Book in advance for the best fares.
  • Subway navigation: The Midosuji Line is Osaka's main subway artery. Suica/Pasmo smartcards and contactless credit cards are accepted. Signs are in Japanese and English.
  • Escalator etiquette: Stand to the right to let others pass on the left — opposite to Tokyo's custom.
  • Bicycle registration: If renting or buying a bike, it must be registered with the police. Theft is not uncommon.
  • Stay connected: Osaka has widespread free Wi-Fi, but a pocket Wi-Fi or local SIM is recommended for reliable navigation.
