About this place

Ordos is a prefecture-level city in Inner Mongolia, China. Its government center is located in the new district of Kangbashi, a striking example of modern Chinese city planning known for its monumental architecture and wide boulevards. The city's most populous area is Dongsheng, a traditional and bustling fourth-tier Chinese city, located about 30 km away. The smaller town of Altan Xire, across the Wulan Mulun River, serves as a commercial and business extension of Kangbashi. While Kangbashi was famously labeled a "Ghost City" upon its construction in 2010, it has since grown into a district with a daytime population of around 100,000, offering a unique and thought-provoking destination for travelers interested in contemporary Chinese urban development.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 11, 2026
  • Use the name "Kangbashi" when communicating with locals to avoid ambiguity between the new city and the broader prefecture.
  • Most hotels are located in Dongsheng District; Altan Xire offers hotels up to 30% cheaper than those in Kangbashi or Dongsheng.
  • Bus line K22 connects the centers of Ordos (Kangbashi) and Dongsheng, but service ends early, so plan your return accordingly.
  • Taxis are plentiful in all three areas, but flag drop is ¥7 and long rides (e.g., Kangbashi to Dongsheng) can cost over ¥80.
  • An overnight train from Beijing is available, but arrives in Dongsheng rather than Kangbashi, requiring a short onward transfer.
