About this place

Last updated Jul 13, 2026

Oral is a city of about 330,000 people in northwestern Kazakhstan, where the Ural and Chagan Rivers meet near the Russian border. Sitting on the western bank of the Ural, it is geographically part of Europe, and its history as a Cossack settlement founded in 1613 has left a strong Russian cultural imprint on the architecture and daily life.

The city center rewards walkers with 19th-century Russian-style buildings along Nazarbayev Avenue and the pedestrian-friendly Dina Nurpeisova Street. Oral also holds a modest place in literary history — Alexander Pushkin visited in 1833 while researching his Pugachev rebellion works.

Things to See

Last updated Jul 13, 2026
  • Nazarbayev Avenue (formerly Dostyk) — the main north-south boulevard through the older western part of the city, lined with traditional Russian architecture, two Orthodox churches (one historic), and the modern Kazakh drama theatre.
  • Dina Nurpeisova Street (formerly Teatralnaya) — a pedestrian-only street in the center, reminiscent of Moscow's Arbat, home to the 150-year-old Russian drama theatre and leading to shopping centers and the main market area.
  • Russian Orthodox churches — at least two churches can be found along Nazarbayev Avenue; the older one is noted for its historic character and traditional design.
  • Historic drama theatres — Kazakhstan's first drama theatre (now the Russian drama theatre) on Dina Nurpeisova Street and the larger Kazakh drama theatre on Nazarbayev Avenue showcase performing-arts heritage.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 13, 2026
  • Double-check street names — after widespread renaming, older maps and apps may still list pre-2020s names; verify major roads like Nazarbayev Avenue (formerly Dostyk) and Dina Nurpeisova Street (formerly Teatralnaya) before navigating.
  • Factor in Russian visa requirements — if traveling by train to other Kazakh cities, the route enters Russia; confirm visa requirements well in advance.
  • Use taxis for flexibility — while buses and marshrutkas exist, street-hailed gypsy cabs and taxi services can be practical for getting around without a transit map.
  • Expect patchy mobile signal on approach roads — as of late 2024, 4G coverage from Kazakh carriers is available in the city but can be unreliable on highways leading in.
