About this place
Onitsha is a sprawling commercial hub of about 1.5 million people in Anambra State, Southeast Nigeria, perched on the eastern bank of the Niger River. It is renowned as home to one of Africa's largest markets in both physical size and volume of goods traded, and it serves as the navigable endpoint for most shipping up the Niger River. The city has long been a centre of trade, dating back to its development as a British commercial and missionary post in the 19th to mid-20th centuries.
After enduring significant damage during the Nigerian-Biafran war, Onitsha was rebuilt and expanded, though rapid population growth driven by oil revenue brought challenges like overcrowding. Today, it remains an economic engine and a key distribution centre for Nollywood films. However, visitors should be aware that the city faces significant environmental challenges and was ranked as one of the most polluted cities in the world in 2016.
