About this place

Last updated Jun 13, 2026

Omsk is a major regional hub in Western Siberia, standing where the Om and Irtysh rivers meet. As one of Russia's largest cities, it blends a rich imperial past with a lively, modern cultural scene. The city was founded as a frontier fortress in 1716 and later became the capital of Western Siberia and parts of Central Asia.

The arrival of the Trans-Siberian Railway at the end of the 19th century spurred a period of rapid growth. This development left Omsk with a handsome neoclassical architectural heritage, especially along its central promenade, Lyubinsky Prospekt. For literature enthusiasts, the city holds a special place as the primary location of Fyodor Dostoevsky's Siberian exile.

Planning Tips

  • Brush up on Russian pronunciation for key destinations and street names, as English is not widely spoken.
  • Negotiate taxi fares in advance and ask your hotel to write down addresses in Russian before heading out.
  • Check the status of ongoing construction projects, as major streets like Lenin Street have experienced extended disruption in the past.
  • When taking the train, you can reach the city center from the station by bus or trolleybus; small change for tickets is appreciated by the conductors on board.
