About this place
Oldham is a former textile town perched on a ridge in Greater Manchester, 7 miles northeast of the city centre in the Pennine foothills. Its main appeal lies beyond the town itself — in the villages and valleys of Saddleworth to the east, where you can explore Delph, Diggle, Greenfield, and Uppermill. Historically split between Lancashire and Yorkshire, the area became part of Greater Manchester in 1974.
Once the world's leading cotton-milling town, Oldham's industrial heyday faded in the late 20th century. Today, visitors come primarily for access to Pennine walking trails across Saddleworth Moor and Standedge, where the landscape feels spare and haunting. The town centre has a handful of pubs and green spaces, but the real draw is the open countryside just beyond.

- July and August — warmest months and best for outdoor activities, though cloud cover remains high and moorland trails can still be boggy.
- September — fewer visitors and the moors take on an atmospheric quality as summer fades into autumn.

Planning Tips
- Use the tram — the Metrolink pink and grey lines connect Oldham to Manchester Victoria in roughly 30 minutes; a day ticket is often the best value.
- Pack waterproof layers — even in summer, rain and wind are common on the exposed moors.
- Check walking conditions — boardwalks exist over the boggier sections of the Pennine Way, but trails can still be wet and muddy outside peak summer.
- Stay near the motorway for convenience — most hotels are clustered around M60 and M62 junctions, ideal for overnight stops rather than immersive town stays.
