About this place
Okazaki sits at the heart of Aichi prefecture, midway between Nagoya and Toyohashi. The city is steeped in history as the birthplace of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and Okazaki Castle remains its cultural anchor. Once a key post town on the Tokaido road and a busy river port, Okazaki today balances historical depth with a relaxed, livable feel.
Visitors will find that many of the main sights — the castle, related museums, and important shrines — cluster in the central area around Higashi-Okazaki and Naka-Okazaki stations. The central and southern districts are fairly flat, making them pleasant to explore on foot or by bicycle, while efficient train connections put Nagoya’s transit hub within easy reach.

Planning Tips
- Choose your station wisely — use JR Okazaki for Tokaido Line access and the Aichi Loop Line connection to Toyota, or Higashi-Okazaki/Naka-Okazaki for castle-area sights.
- Consider a bicycle — flat central and southern neighborhoods make cycling an efficient way to reach temples and restaurants without relying on Japanese-language bus routes.
- Carry cash for transit — Meitetsu and Aichi Loop Line trains aren't JR Pass-compatible, so check fare requirements ahead of time.
