About this place

Last updated Aug 22, 2026

Ōgaki is a modest city in Gifu Prefecture, about ten minutes by train from the prefectural capital. With a population near 160,000, it offers a compact core around the main station, plus two outlying districts — Sunomata and Kamiishizu — that were added through mergers. The city center is walkable and holds a historic castle and a museum dedicated to the poet Matsuo Basho, while Akasaka-juku preserves the feel of the 56th post station on the Nakasendō route. Most visitors use Ōgaki as a relaxed half-day or day stop between Nagoya and Maibara, but the mix of castle-town history and rural ward scenery rewards those who linger.

Things to Do

Last updated Aug 22, 2026
  • Walk the Nakasendō at Akasaka-juku — One of the historic post stations, reachable on foot from Akasaka Station, lined with old buildings and a preserved Edo-period atmosphere.
  • Stroll the castle grounds — Ōgaki Castle sits close to the station, and its park-like surroundings make a pleasant walk even when the keep is closed.
  • Trace Matsuo Basho’s travels — The local museum dedicated to the famous haiku poet gives context to his journey through central Japan.
  • Ride the Yoro Line to Ibigawa or Kuwana — A scenic rural rail detour for travelers who want countryside views and small-town stops.
  • Explore the Sunomata area by bus — Cross the river to reach quiet neighborhoods and temples that few international travelers see.

Planning Tips

Last updated Aug 22, 2026
  • Use Maibara or Nagoya for shinkansen connections — Transfer to the Tokaido Main Line at Maibara (from Kyoto/Osaka) or Nagoya (from Tokyo) for the fastest access.
  • Pick up a bus schedule for outer districts — Sunomata and Kamiishizu lack train stations; check Meishin Kintetsu Bus or Ogaki City Community Bus timetables in advance.
  • Stay close to Ogaki Station — Most sights and transit options radiate from the station area, so accommodation nearby simplifies logistics.
  • Pair Ōgaki with Gifu City — The prefectural capital is just ten minutes away by train, offering a natural overnight base with more dining and lodging choices.
