About this place
Odawara is a coastal city in Kanagawa Prefecture, sitting along Sagami Bay roughly 80 km southwest of Tokyo. It serves as a natural gateway between the capital and the Hakone hot-springs region, and it has a long history as a stop on the old Tokaido road linking Edo and Kyoto. Today, the city wears its heritage lightly alongside modern rail connections and a proud local food culture.
Travelers often pass through Odawara en route to Hakone, but the city rewards a longer stay. Its specialty foods — including the fish-paste cakes known as kamaboko and dried horse mackerel called himono — offer a distinct taste of the Sagami Bay coast, while the efficient transport links make it an easy base for day trips into the mountains or back toward Tokyo.

Best Time to Visit
- Summer (mid‑July to mid‑August) — warm, stable weather with average temperatures around 25.4°C suits outdoor exploring, though expect partly cloudy skies and moderate humidity.
- Spring and autumn — while specific seasonal data is limited, these shoulder periods often bring milder temperatures and more comfortable sightseeing conditions for Hakone day trips.
- Winter — the coast remains essentially snow‑free, so rail and city access stay reliable year‑round, but temperatures drop and some mountain roads near Hakone may close.

Planning Tips
- Train-pass strategy — the Japan Rail Pass fully covers the Kodama bullet train to Odawara, but the JR East Rail Pass does not; check your pass type before boarding the Shinkansen.
- Budget-friendly rail — the Odakyu commuter service from Shinjuku takes about 90 minutes and costs only ¥850, with a ¥870 surcharge for a faster, reserved Romance Car seat.
- Ryokan timing — if staying at a traditional inn, plan an early arrival or spend your first night in Tokyo to avoid missing evening meals or curfew deadlines.
- Dining must‑tries — seek out kamaboko fish cakes, himono dried fish, sour umeboshi pickles, and the local Odawaradon rice bowl for a true taste of the city.
