About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Nukus is the capital of the autonomous republic of Karakalpakstan in western Uzbekistan. It’s a remote regional center that sees most travelers passing through for a single night — usually to visit the renowned Savitsky collection. While the city itself is modest and shows its age, the local Karakalpak people are famously welcoming; learning just a few words of the language will earn warm smiles. It also serves as the most practical base for journeys to the Aral Sea and the ship graveyard at Moynoq.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Aral Sea day trip — Nukus is the closest major city to the former shore, making it the best launch point for excursions to Moynoq and the haunting ship graveyard roughly 200 km away. A taxi takes 3–3½ hours each way and costs around US$70.
  • Browse the central market — A vast, mostly covered bazaar sprawls near the bus station. It’s a good escape from midday heat and a lively place to photograph everyday commerce with polite permission.
  • Taste Qaraqalpaq vodka — Seek out the local Qarataw brand, a smooth vodka produced in the region that even Qaraqalpaks consider a point of pride.

Things to See

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Karakalpak State Museum — Home to natural history exhibits including the very last Turan Tiger, caught in 1972, and regional cultural displays.
  • Museum of Applied Arts — Located nearby, this museum showcases traditional Karakalpak fabrics, clothing, and jewelry.
  • Moynoq ship graveyard — The rusting hulls stranded in the desert are a stark monument to the shrinking Aral Sea and the most compelling sight in the region.

Best Time to Visit

  • Late summer to early autumn (Aug–Sep) — Temperatures settle to a long-term average near 24.2°C with almost no rain, cloud cover around 12.3%, and abundant sunshine — the most comfortable season for desert travel and Aral Sea excursions.
  • Spring (Apr–early May) — While not specified in detail, mild daytime temperatures and blooming desert landscapes make spring a practical alternative for sightseeing before the summer heat builds.
  • Avoid peak winter — Cold temperatures and potentially poor road conditions make winter a less appealing time for the long drives to Moynoq and Urgench.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Book trains early — The Tashkent–Nukus route fills up quickly, so reserve seats as far ahead as possible, especially for the 17-hour overnight journey.
  • Bring US dollars — Hotels typically expect payment in dollars and dollar rates run higher than som; carry enough cash to cover your stay.
  • Learn a few Karakalpak words — Basic greetings go a long way in connecting with locals and are met with genuine appreciation.
  • Start Aral Sea trips at dawn — A taxi to Moynoq takes 3–3½ hours one way; leaving early maximizes time at the ship graveyard and avoids the strongest afternoon heat.
  • Navigate via shared taxis — To reach Khiva, take a minivan from the North Gate of Ichon-Qala to Urgench, then find a shared taxi at the Olympic Stadium; the full journey takes over two hours and costs around 100,000 som.
