About this place
Novorossiysk is a major port city of 230,000 in Krasnodar Krai, set on a 25km bay and shaped like an amphitheater by the surrounding mountains. The mountains shield it from cold continental air, giving it a humid subtropical climate and a dramatic weather phenomenon where cold air masses spill over the ridges. The city’s long history stretches from an ancient Greek grain-trading colony to Ottoman control, Crimean War sieges, and fierce World War II battles reflected in its many monuments.
